Your front door takes more abuse than almost any other part of your home: sun, rain, temperature swings, and daily use. To weather it all, the material your door is made from matters more than most people realize when they're shopping.
Renuity's doors are available in wood, fiberglass, and steel, and each one has a real place depending on your situation. This guide walks through the four things that drive the decision — climate, maintenance, budget, and appearance — so you can land on the right answer rather than just picking the one that looks good in a photo.
Where you live is often the deciding factor before anything else comes into play, because the three materials respond to weather in meaningfully different ways in your entry door.
Wood absorbs moisture, which causes the slab to swell and contract seasonally. That movement stresses the finish at the edges, and once water gets past it, the bottom rail is the first place to show rot: a process that moves faster than most homeowners expect when maintenance slips.

Fiberglass doesn't absorb moisture, so it stays stable through humidity swings. The seal stays tight, the finish holds, and you're not fighting the same uphill battle that wood requires in wet conditions. It also handles direct sun better than wood, which matters on south- or west-facing doors in hot climates where wood may need refinishing every two years rather than three or four.
Steel is stable at the core but vulnerable at the surface. An unaddressed scratch will rust, and rust spreads under the surrounding finish, which makes steel a harder choice in coastal or high-humidity environments. In cold climates with freeze-thaw cycles, wood's expansion and contraction can also work on frame joints over time, giving fiberglass or steel an edge there as well.
For humid, coastal, or hot climates, fiberglass is the practical choice. In cold climates where upfront cost and security matter most, steel makes sense. In dry, mild climates, the performance gap between all three narrows and the factors below take over.

Wood needs exterior-grade stain or paint refreshed every two to three years, plus annual attention to the sealant at the frame joints, particularly the bottom rail where water collects. Skip a cycle and you're not just dealing with a faded finish; you're dealing with moisture intrusion that's already done damage you can't see. Higher-grade options like mahogany hold their finish longer and are worth the price difference if wood is the direction you're going.
Fiberglass needs almost nothing by comparison. A periodic wash and a stain refresh every five to ten years is about all it asks for, and missing that window by a year won't cause lasting damage. For buyers who want to spend their weekends on things other than door maintenance, fiberglass is the clear winner.
Steel sits in the middle. It's low effort in most respects, but you need to catch paint chips promptly! Exposed metal rusts, and rust spreads under the surrounding finish before you notice it on the surface. Dents are also a problem, since they don't sand out cleanly and usually mean replacing a panel rather than repairing one.

Steel is the most affordable starting point between these materials for a standard entry door, and is reliable as long as the finish is maintained. If it's not, surface damage can push costs up faster than expected.
Fiberglass costs more upfront but tends to offer the best value over a 15- to 20-year period, since it doesn't rot, rust, or need frequent refinishing. That stability is a significant part of what you're paying for, particularly if you're investing in a custom door configuration.
Wood carries the highest upfront cost, especially in solid species or custom profiles, and total cost over time depends heavily on how consistently maintenance is performed. A well-kept wood door can last 30 years or more. One that's neglected in a wet climate may need replacement in half that time, which changes the value considerably.

Fiberglass doors with a woodgrain finish can closely approximate the look of real wood, with detailed texturing and quality stains that make the two difficult to tell apart in most conditions. Wood does offer natural grain variation that no manufactured material fully replicates, but for the vast majority of homeowners, a well-finished fiberglass door delivers the aesthetic they're after without the maintenance trade-off. In climates where wood would be fighting a losing battle against humidity, it's also the smarter long-term decision.
Wood is also the most customizable in terms of panel profiles, carved details, and glass placement. It gives craftspeople more to work with. Steel is the most limited aesthetically. It works well on modern or minimal exteriors where the door is a clean geometric element, but it tends to fall short on traditional or craftsman-style homes where the architecture calls for more visual texture and detail.

One thing worth noting if you're replacing an existing door: the frame and threshold condition matters as much as the slab material. A replacement door assessment should cover the full opening, not just what's visible from the outside.
Once you know which material fits your situation, the next step is confirming the right configuration for your specific opening. Frame condition, dimensions, and hardware all affect what works, and getting those details right is what separates a good installation from a great one.
