Before you call anyone or start pulling up cost estimates, it helps to understand what kind of problem you're actually dealing with. The right update for your kitchen depends on four things: what condition your cabinets are in, how much you want to change, what your doors are made of, and how long you plan to stay in the home.
Work through those in order and the right path becomes clear.
This is the starting point, because everything else builds on it.
Every update option short of full replacement assumes the cabinet boxes, the structural frames your doors and shelves attach to, are worth keeping. If they're not, no surface update changes that. You'd essentially be fixing the outside of a problem.
Before deciding anything, take a few minutes to check these:
If the boxes check out, you have real options. If they don't, replacement is the right call regardless of upfront cost. Putting new surfaces on compromised boxes buys you a few years at best.

This is where most people skip ahead and end up with a solution that doesn't match the problem.
You want a minor refresh. The kitchen works fine; it just feels a little dated or builder-grade. Hardware replacement can be suitable for your scope. Swapping out handles, pulls, and knobs is inexpensive and carries no real risk of a bad outcome. If this describes your situation, you may not need a bigger project.
You want a color change but like your door style. Painting is an option, and it can work, but the substrate your doors are made from matters a lot. Solid wood and MDF doors take paint reasonably well with the right prep. Laminate and thermofoil-wrapped doors are a different story; getting paint to stick reliably on those surfaces is difficult, and kitchens are particularly tough environments for paint to hold up in over time.
If your doors are laminate or thermofoil, painting is a higher-risk path than it might appear. The refacing vs. refinishing vs. replacement post covers the full durability case if you want to learn more.
You want a complete transformation. You want a new door style, new finish, or a kitchen that doesn't look like it belongs to the previous decade — but you want to keep the layout and skip the demolition. This is where refacing fits. Refacing replaces every visible surface, including the doors themselves, so you're not just changing the color of what you already have.
A raised-panel kitchen from the 1990s becomes a clean Shaker kitchen. Dark oak becomes white or navy. The layout stays the same, the countertops and flooring stay untouched, and the result reads as a complete kitchen update.
Renuity's cabinet refacing service replaces every visible surface: doors, drawer fronts, and box exteriors. Our process keeps your existing cabinet structure in place, with full door style selection included.

This one changes the math more than most people expect.
If you're planning to sell within a few years: A hardware swap or a professionally painted set of solid wood doors may be enough to make the kitchen more appealing without over-investing. Refacing is still worth considering if the kitchen is actively working against the home's value, but the calculation is different than for a place you plan to stay in.
If this is your long-term home: Durability matters more than the upfront number. Paint in a kitchen environment tends to show wear faster than most people expect. The heat, humidity, and daily use take a toll. Refacing uses professional-grade materials bonded to the box exterior and factory-built replacement doors, built to hold up for decades. For a home you're staying in, a solution that lasts is almost always the better financial decision once you factor in the cost of redoing a finish that didn't hold.
| Situation | Your options |
|---|---|
| Boxes are damaged or soft | Replacement. No surface update fixes this. |
| Minor refresh, layout and style are fine | Hardware replacement or cabinet refacing |
| Color change, solid wood or MDF doors, shorter timeline | Refacing or painting; know the caveats on material when painting! |
| Color change, laminate or thermofoil doors | Refacing |
| New style, complete transformation, long-term home | Refacing |
| Layout doesn't work | Replacement |
The situation that points most clearly toward refacing: sound boxes, a layout that works, a kitchen that looks dated or was cheaply built to begin with, and a home you plan to stay in. That describes a lot of kitchens over fifteen years old, and it's exactly what refacing is designed for.
