A murphy bed, also called a wall bed, folds up into a cabinet or wall unit when not in use, freeing the floor space for other purposes. The mechanism is simple: a hinged frame mounts to the wall and pivots the mattress platform between vertical and horizontal positions. When it’s down, it’s a bed. When it’s up, the room is back.
The concept is straightforward, but buying one involves decisions that affect how well it works long-term: comfort, mattress compatibility, size, configuration, and cost. This guide covers what buyers actually need to know before committing.
Murphy beds come in standard mattress sizes: twin, full, queen, and king. Queen is the most common choice for guest rooms and primary bedrooms. Twin and full work well in tighter spaces or for single occupants.
Beyond mattress size, ceiling height and floor clearance matter. Vertical murphy beds (those that fold down from the long side) require more ceiling height, typically at least 84 to 88 inches. Horizontal configurations fold from the short side and work in rooms with lower ceilings, though they require more wall width. Measure your room carefully and account for the full arc of the bed when it’s in motion, not just when it’s open or closed.
Standard murphy beds anchor into wall studs. A properly anchored wall bed is stable, safe, and designed for daily use. Freestanding models exist, but tend to have a larger footprint and offer less stability.
Wall type matters for installation. Standard wood-frame walls with drywall are the most straightforward. Masonry, concrete, or metal stud walls require additional hardware and add to installation complexity and labor time. When working with Renuity, we will assess your wall type before the job begins.

Most quality murphy bed systems support 600 to 1,000 pounds of combined mattress and occupant weight. The mechanism — typically a piston or spring system — is what makes the bed easy to raise and lower, and its rating should match or exceed the mattress weight plus the realistic load it will carry. Verify the weight capacity of any unit you’re considering and cross-reference it against the mattress you plan to use.
Murphy beds come in three main configurations beyond the basic fold-down frame:
Murphy bed with desk. A fold-down desk remains level as the bed transitions, allowing the unit to function as a workspace during the day and a bedroom at night. This is the most practical option for a dedicated home office that also needs to serve as a guest room. For more on making a dual-purpose office work, our office and den ideas guide and home office organization tips are worth a look.
Murphy bed with shelves. Integrated shelving on either side of the bed panel provides storage for books, décor, and personal items. The shelves remain accessible whether the bed is open or closed.
Murphy bed cabinet. The unit is designed to look like a standard wall cabinet when closed, so no visible bed hardware or mattress. This works well in rooms where the guest bed function should be visually secondary.

A murphy bed frame holds the mattress in place and provides a stable platform. It doesn’t determine how the bed feels to sleep on any more than a standard bed frame does. Comfort comes from the mattress, not the mechanism.
Most murphy bed systems accommodate standard mattresses. Twin, full, queen, and king sizes all work depending on the unit. The constraints are thickness and weight: most systems are designed for mattresses between 10 and 12 inches thick, and heavier mattresses (memory foam in particular) can strain the mechanism over time if the unit isn’t rated for the load. Check the manufacturer’s weight and thickness specifications before purchasing a mattress separately.
A murphy bed you use every night should have the same mattress you’d buy for a standard bed. Don’t compromise on mattress quality because the bed folds up!
According to Angi’s 2025 installation cost data, murphy bed installation costs most homeowners between $2,000 and $4,000, with a national average of $3,000. The low end for basic wall-mounted units starts around $1,500; custom configurations can reach $15,000 or more.
Configuration drives cost more than any other variable:

Size adds to the base price. A queen — the most popular choice — typically runs $1,500 to $4,000 before add-ons. A king runs $2,500 to $6,000.
Add-ons like integrated shelving ($200 to $1,000), cabinetry ($500 to $2,500), and lighting ($100 to $500) are where costs climb beyond the base unit. Labor runs $50 to $150 per hour, or $300 to $800 as a flat rate for standard installations.
The reason murphy beds cost more than standard beds comes down to three things: the mechanism (piston or spring systems engineered for thousands of cycles), the custom cabinetry built around it, and professional installation that anchors the unit safely to the wall. A flat-pack murphy bed kit from a big-box retailer may cost less upfront but uses lighter hardware and typically requires significant DIY skill to install correctly. A professionally designed and installed unit is built to a higher standard.
A properly installed murphy bed is safe. The mechanism is designed to hold the mattress securely in the raised position. When properly installed, it won’t fall on its own. Wall anchoring distributes the load across studs rather than relying on surface hardware alone. Quality pistons or spring systems are rated for thousands of open-and-close cycles without degrading.
The safety concerns that exist are almost entirely installation-related. A unit that isn’t anchored correctly, that uses undersized hardware for the mattress weight, or that was assembled without accounting for the wall type can fail. Professional installation eliminates most of those variables.
Daily use is not a problem for a quality unit. Murphy beds are not designed to be occasional guest beds only; the mechanisms are rated for regular use and the mattress platform provides the same support as a fixed bed frame. The main practical consideration for daily use is the routine of raising and lowering it, which can take less than a minute with a properly balanced mechanism.

Murphy beds work best in rooms that need to serve more than one purpose. The most common use cases:
If the room only ever functions as a bedroom and space isn’t a constraint, a standard bed is simpler. Murphy beds earn their cost in rooms where the floor space they free up is genuinely used for something else.
