Replacing a shower involves more decisions than most homeowners expect going in. The choice between a prefab shower kit and a professional remodel isn't just about budget. It's also about whether a kit will physically fit your space, what condition your current shower is in, and what you actually want the result to look like in five years.
Get those questions answered first and the right path usually becomes obvious.
Renuity offers professional shower replacement and walk-in shower installation as well as tub-to-shower conversions.
A shower kit is a prefabricated unit that includes wall panels and a shower base, sold as a packaged system. Most are made from fiberglass or acrylic and come in standard sizes designed to fit common alcove openings. The appeal is straightforward: lower upfront cost, faster installation, and no tile or grout to maintain.
What a kit is not: a custom enclosure or a solution to an underlying problem. It's a surface replacement. Understanding that distinction is what makes the rest of this decision clear.
Shower kits are built around standard alcove dimensions. The most common sizes are 32x32, 36x36, and 36x48 inches, along with 60x30 and 60x32 inches, the latter two designed specifically to replace standard tub footprints. If your existing opening matches one of those footprints closely enough, a kit could be an option. If it doesn't, you're looking at framing modifications that add labor cost and complexity, at which point the price advantage of the kit starts to wane.
Measure your opening before evaluating anything else: width from wall to wall, depth from back wall to the front edge, and ceiling height. If those numbers don't land near a standard kit size, a professional installation is likely the more practical path regardless of other factors. For reference on what spatial requirements look like for different shower configurations, the walk-in shower dimensions guide covers the relevant measurements.
A kit alone isn't sufficient for a tub-to-shower conversion. While 60-inch kits are manufactured specifically for standard tub footprints, the conversion still requires plumbing work to reposition the drain, which is something a kit doesn't include or address. A professional conversion handles the plumbing, framing, and waterproofing as part of the project.

A shower kit installs over whatever substrate is already there. If the backer board and framing behind your current shower walls have absorbed moisture over time, a new kit goes on top of that damage without addressing it.
Check for these signs before committing to either path:
If any of these are present, the substrate needs assessment before anything gets installed over it. A professional remodel that includes proper substrate inspection can help solve the problem. A kit that goes over a damaged substrate isn't a fix.
Worth noting: tile showers can look intact on the surface for years while the substrate behind them has already degraded, so the absence of visible symptoms doesn't confirm a clean substrate.

A basic shower kit typically includes wall panels and a shower base. Beyond that, contents vary significantly by product and price point. Before pricing any kit, confirm whether it includes a shower drain, sealants and adhesives compatible with the kit materials, a shower door or enclosure (most base kits don't include one), and any trim or transition pieces needed for your specific opening.
A kit that appears affordable at face value can add up considerably once you account for everything that isn't in the box. Labor for installation is separate from the kit cost entirely, and fitting a prefab unit into a non-standard opening adds time and expense.
If you do go the kit route, material quality affects how the installation holds up over time. Acrylic holds color better, resists staining more effectively, and is more impact-resistant than fiberglass. Both materials can flex underfoot if the base isn't properly supported during installation with a mortar bed or equivalent backing. This is required regardless of which material you choose. Entry-level kits that skip this step are where most performance complaints originate.
Both acrylic and fiberglass kits eliminate grout joints entirely, which removes the primary path for water to reach the substrate. The difference between a kit and a professional system is how well that protection holds over time.
Professional acrylic systems, like those used in a Renuity installation, are manufactured to tighter specifications than retail kits and installed with proper substrate preparation, which is what determines long-term performance.
Our acrylic vs. fiberglass comparison covers this distinction in more detail; the same material logic that applies to tubs applies to shower surrounds.
A shower kit could be a valid option if your opening matches standard dimensions, the substrate is in good condition, and the shower is in a secondary bathroom where longevity and aesthetics are lower priorities. It's also a reasonable choice for rental properties or homes being prepared for sale, where a clean, functional shower is the goal rather than a long-term investment.
A professional remodel is the right call when the opening is non-standard, when there's substrate damage that needs to be properly addressed, or when you're converting a tub to a walk-in shower. It's also the better fit if you want integrated features like built-in seating or accessibility hardware, if the shower is in your primary bathroom and you're staying long-term, or if a manufacturer warranty backed by professional installation matters to you.
For most primary bathroom replacements, the professional remodel is the more durable and cost-effective long-term decision once you account for installation labor, kit accessories, and the realistic likelihood of needing to redo work within a few years.
