If you've been researching shower replacements, you've probably come across the name LuxStone. What is this material, and what advantages does KOHLER’s product offer versus other options?
This post covers what KOHLER LuxStone showers are made of, how that material performs compared to the alternatives, what the full system includes, and what installation looks like in practice. If your current shower is showing signs it's time for a replacement and you're trying to make an informed decision, this is where to start.
LuxStone is a composite wall panel made from crushed stone suspended in high-performance resin. That combination is worth understanding, because it's what drives most of the product's practical advantages.
Natural stone is dense and hard, but porous. Water works into the surface over time, which is why granite and marble require periodic sealing and why unsealed stone in a wet environment develops staining and microbial growth. The resin in LuxStone's composition eliminates that weakness. The surface doesn't have entry points for water to enter, which means it doesn't absorb moisture, doesn't support mold growth the way grout or natural stone does, and doesn't require sealing to maintain that resistance.

Acrylic and fiberglass panels solve the porosity problem differently: they're essentially plastic and nonporous by default, but that material softens and develops micro-scratches over time from normal cleaning. Those scratches trap soap residue and dull the surface finish. LuxStone's crushed stone content gives it a hardness that plastic-based panels can't match, which is why it holds its appearance over years of use rather than gradually looking worn.
The grout-free installation is a direct result of the panel construction. LuxStone walls are custom-cut to fit your shower space and joined with a hidden joint system. With no grout lines, there's no porous material running across the wall surface for mold and soap scum to colonize. The panels themselves wipe clean with a standard multi-surface cleaner.
The result is a surface that looks like stone, performs better than stone for moisture resistance, and requires a fraction of the maintenance.

Every shower wall material involves tradeoffs. Here's where the alternatives actually stand, and why LuxStone comes out ahead on the factors that matter most to homeowners over the long term.
Ceramic and porcelain tile
Fiberglass
Acrylic
Natural stone (granite, marble)
LuxStone addresses the primary failure point of every category above: either porosity and maintenance burden (tile, natural stone) or surface degradation and limited design options (acrylic, fiberglass).
For a deeper look at how these materials compare, see our full breakdown of shower wall alternatives.

LuxStone is available in ten wall designs, spanning solid colors, stone-look patterns, and textured finishes. Two options, Calacatta Gold and Statuary, are recent additions to the lineup.
Most LuxStone designs are available in matte or glossy finishes. Matte finishes absorb light rather than reflecting it, which makes water spots and fingerprints less visible between cleanings, a practical advantage in a daily-use shower. Glossy finishes reflect light, which can make a smaller or darker shower feel more open, and they tend to give stone-look patterns more visual depth. Neither is a maintenance liability given the nonporous surface; the choice is primarily aesthetic.
Wall selection should be coordinated with your fixture and hardware finishes. Chrome reads well against cooler patterns like Statuary, Calacatta Crema, and White. Brushed nickel is the most versatile finish and works across the full catalog. Matte black pairs well with White Brick and Ice Grey for a contemporary look. Warm bronze hardware pairs naturally with Biscuit, Calacatta Gold, and the Dune options.
Renuity's KOHLER bathroom fixtures are specified to coordinate with the LuxStone system, so your hardware and wall finish selections happen together during the design consultation rather than separately.

The walls are the most visible component, but a LuxStone shower is a complete system. Understanding what else is included helps clarify the scope of what you're selecting.
Shower base LuxStone bases are made from the same crushed stone composite as the walls. They're available in multiple sizes and profiles, including low-threshold and barrier-free configurations for accessibility. The base, walls, and any glass components are specified together during the consultation to ensure dimensional fit.
Glass doors and enclosures LuxStone installations can include framed, semi-frameless, or frameless glass doors depending on the layout and design preference. For open configurations, a doorless layout is also an option. See our guide to doorless shower design if that's a direction you're considering. Glass door selection affects both the visual weight of the finished space and how the wall patterns read from outside the shower. The best glass shower door for your space depends on the enclosure dimensions and how much of the wall design you want visible.
Accessories LuxStone showers can be configured with several built-in accessories that are installed as part of the system rather than added afterward:
Showerheads and faucets KOHLER showerheads, hand showers, and valve systems are available as part of the installation. These are selected during the consultation alongside the wall and base, so finish coordination is handled in one process rather than requiring separate sourcing.

LuxStone installation starts with an in-home consultation. A Renuity specialist measures the space, walks through wall design and finish options with you, and specifies the base, glass, and accessories. All selections are made during this visit so panels can be custom-cut to your exact dimensions before installation day.
On installation day, the existing shower or tub enclosure is removed. Whether LuxStone can be installed over existing tile depends on the condition of that tile. If it's firmly attached, dry, and shows no signs of water damage or substrate failure, an over-tile installation may be possible. If there's any moisture behind the wall, loose tiles, or damage to the substrate, that needs to be addressed first. The over-tile installation question is one the technician evaluates during the consultation, not something that gets decided on installation day. Renuity's standard process involves removal to ensure the new system has a clean, sound foundation.
Once the space is prepped, the custom-cut panels are set using a hidden joint system with no grout, no tile-by-tile placement, and no cure time before the shower can be used. The process is efficient relative to a traditional tile installation, which typically requires several days including curing. Renuity handles removal of the old enclosure, installation of all system components, and cleanup as part of the process. See the full overview of Renuity's bathroom installation process for more detail on what to expect.
If you're converting from a tub rather than replacing an existing shower, the scope is slightly different. See our page on tub-to-shower conversion for what that involves. For planning the dimensions of the new space, our guide to walk-in shower dimensions and clearances is a useful reference before the consultation.

LuxStone makes the most sense for homeowners who want a shower that looks and feels high-end without the ongoing maintenance that high-end materials like natural stone actually require. If the reason you're replacing your current shower is deteriorating grout, recurring mold, or a surface that no longer responds to cleaning, LuxStone eliminates those specific problems at the material level rather than patching over them.
It's also a strong fit for homeowners planning ahead for long-term use of the space. The barrier-free base options, integrated shower barre, and fold-down seating make it possible to design accessibility into the shower from the start without the space looking clinical. For more on that design approach, see our post on aging in place with KOHLER LuxStone.
If your primary need is a soaking or therapeutic bath rather than a shower, a KOHLER Walk-In Bath addresses a different set of requirements. For most homeowners replacing a standard shower or converting from a tub they no longer use, LuxStone is the better-fit product.
